There has never been a better time to visit Bilbao, especially now that Clickair will be starting daily flights from Gatwick on the 30th March 2008. Flights will depart Gatwick and 09.55 and arrive in Bilbao at 10.45. Regular buses connect Bilbao airport with the city centre in less than 30 minutes.

Bilbao, once known as an Industrial city, has successfully revamped itself and these days attracts thousands of visitors. The morning flight from Gatwick is perfect timing to allow a short break in this interesting city.

Let’s have a look at some of the attractions on offer. First off we have the Guggenhaim museum which sits alongside the Nervion River and simply must not be missed. The structure is unusual in that is resembles a ship being made from glass, titanium, and limestone. Once inside the museum is home to modern and contemporary art featuring both Spanish and International artists.

Close to the museum you will find the marvelous Campo Volantin Footbridge which was opened in 1997. It’s a truly modern bridge and one that you will be mesmerized by and want to capture on camera.

Casco Viejo is an attractive historical area of the city. It makes for a pleasant stroll through its street markets. The area offers plenty of restaurants, shops and bars so can be quite lively. Close to the Casco Viejo area you will also find the Basque Museum – Euskal Museoa. The museum is housed in a Baroque-style church and makes for an interesting visit.

To sample the delights of the traditional Basque grill then you have come to the right place as Bilbao is home to many restaurants offering traditional fare and it’s said that the best is on offer here. One of the most popular restaurants is La Gabarra, this is a local roast-and-cider house, located near the Guggenheim museum and it gets very busy so you may need to reserve a table especially in the evenings.

You will find that the majority of the hotels are well located and within walking distance of the city’s attractions. DHR has a wide range of Bilbao hotels from 2* to 5* to suit every taste and budget right through to the luxurious Hotel Lopez de Haro
