Turkey is a place that boasts of so many unique treasures–from beautiful and historic mosques and palaces to educational museums, from impressive ruins to towering mountains, from scrumptious cuisine to remarkable archaeological sites, this place has it all. This is one of the reasons why so many visitors come flocking in every year, and they all leave the country happy and perhaps wanting to stay longer.
For this feature, we’re focusing on one of the country’s best treasures, Pamukkale, a site in the Denizli Province in Turkey. If you find yourself traveling to Turkey soon, this is a place that you certainly must not miss. Below are some of the reasons why going here will be worth it.
Meaning “cotton castle” in Turkish, Pamukkale is UNESCO World Heritage Site; a natural wonder that will make you feel as if you’re in a totally different world. Some of the things in store for visitors here are amazing hot springs, travertines, thermal springs, terraces, and so much more. Looking at the photos alone will already give you an idea why this place is considered as one of the country’s most breathtaking treasures.
It’s called the cotton castle because the hot springs with mineral deposits have formed thick layers of white limestone, which makes it appear like cotton that cascades down the slopes. From afar, the terraces made of travertine look as if you can just jump right on it and be under something so smooth, soft and comfortable (but don’t do it, they just appear that way!)
Aside from being a sight that’s unlike any other place in the world, this place also holds a rich history behind it. This used to be the site of the ancient city of Heirapolis. Now, of you visit, you will still be able to see the ruins—buildings that have been buried by deposits of calcium carbonate. Here, you’ll find a grand theatre (which has been excellently restored in the 1970s by talented artisans), baths, and a huge necropolis.

Aside from the pleasure that one will have in looking at these magnificent formations, other things in store for visitors here are pools that have been around for thousands of years. It has also been said and believed that the water here gives lots of different benefits to the people who decide to swim in it–some of the said illnesses that they say could be cured by these waters are rheumatism and asthma. To those of you who love Roman architecture, you will definitely have a blast walking through this place. Also do not miss the Hierapolis Museum when you’re here. Formerly called the Archaeological Museum, this Roman bath will walk you through some very historical sites that are just to significant to miss.
